IC 342

available in multiple languages :

Located in the camelopardalis constellation, IC 342 is a barred spiral galaxy of a faily large apparent size. It is distant of approx. 7 million light years, making it one of the closest galaxies from the local group. Although it has a magnitude of 9, it is a bit difficult to observe or image, because it is lying in the galactic plane, which filters incoming light from it. This is why it was discovered only in 1895 by William Frederick Denning. Its galactic disc is well designed, but is faily pale in colour, even if it is rather rich in HII regions, which are well revealed in H alpha band.
